NDWorks campus news for faculty and staff

When it comes to major repairs—such as providing long-term recycling solutions for a campus of the size of the University of Notre Dame—changes are carried out in stages. In 2020, the Sustainability Office plans to launch a pilot recycling program in the busy 11-story Grace Hall, where dozens of administrative offices are located. But the pandemic is coming, most of the university employees are working from home, and Grace and many other campus buildings are uninhabited. However, since face-to-face teaching resumed in August 2020, the dormitory has been occupied. The Sustainability Office has instead introduced a pilot program in the dormitory building. At the same time, the existing recycling program on campus has also been temporarily suspended. Now, the office is expanding its pilot program to include Geddes Hall, Malloy Hall, Reyniers Life Building and Decio Faculty Hall. These buildings are used for different purposes—including classrooms, laboratories, and/or offices—which allows building services to test the modified process in different environments, make adjustments as needed, and ensure that its employees are trained. The plan includes a new direct partnership with Recycling Works, a local material recycling program that collects recyclables from campuses. This relationship enables the University of Notre Dame to participate more actively in recycling, enhancing the ability to track and measure where recyclables leave the campus and where they have actually been recycled. This is consistent with the Catholic mission of the university, which is to care for the public interest and be a good steward of the environment. The success of the expanded campus recycling program depends on each of us. We must put the correct items in the recycling container (see below) and bring our recyclable items to the central recycling location of our building. When your building joins the pilot program, your building manager will tell you the center of the building.
